One of the classic four functions of the media is surveillance of the environment.  This was commonly understood to mean consuming media such as news in order to help understand the world around us.  Given what you know about the virtual panopticon, what concerns might a critical theorist have about the role of the media in creating a mass surveillance society - i.e. a world in which the media watch the masses.
