MACS 110 | Introduction to Mass Communication Theory

                Date and Time: December 16th, 7:00-10:00 p.m., Rm. A210. 

Please answer the following questions. 

  1. Discuss four mass communication theories that helped you to understand our mass mediated culture and explain why. 
  2. What are some of the differences between macroscopic and microscopic mass communication theories.  Give an example of how one method would be better than the other given a particular avenue of inquiry.
  3. In what ways might mass media be liberating and enriching ?  What possibilities do they hold for oppression and social control ?  Connect your discussion of the latter to theoretical perspective(s) discussed in the course.
  4. The textbook concludes with a discussion of the media literacy movement.  Besides, pornography and violence in the media, what are the most important topic areas you think teachers should address and why ?
  5. If you were to speculate about which theoretical perspective is likely to provide most insight into the short-term future (next five years) of mass communication, what would it be and why ?

You may bring typed pages of notes to the exam, but only provided they're submitted along with your exam booklet.  No scanning of texts and transfer into MS Word is permitted.  In addition to material from the course readings, lectures, and class discussion, please feel free to draw upon information from other sources such as web sites.  Remember, however, to provide references to secondary sources.   The sites below are provided as examples.
